[ A little alarm goes off — buzz, buzz, buzz — from Eli's phone where he left it on the nightstand next to the expansive king bed that takes up most of the space in their hotel room. A 5 a.m. buzzer telling him it's time to get up for his usual early morning run through the city.
This morning, however, he only groans and stirs from within the pile of three others cuddled up on the same bed, buried under the sheets. ]
...someone shut that stupid thing off... 'm not goin' for a run today...
[ He may be a bit too tired, a bit too sore, and very uninterested in leaving the shared bed anytime soon. ]
[ McGillis wakes up feeling disoriented. An unfamiliar bed, an unfamiliar alarm sound, unfamiliar body heat-- and honestly, also unfamiliar exhaustion. It's 5am, he should not still have been sleeping this deeply!
Really, he'd kind of been planning on leaving the bed before everyone else wakes up and-- well, that didn't work out.
McGillis removes his arm from where it had fallen over the heap of bodies and turns onto his other side, towards the nightstand so he can reach Eli's damn phone. ]
... we shouldn't condone you slacking off.
[ Said halfway as a joke, but that doesn't come across well when he's still so tired. He does shut the alarm off though. ]
[Conversely - it's 5am, Celeste should really just be going to sleep now. Never mind Sunset City's upending of his usual schedule, if he has to claim it to get anyone to stay in bed, he will.
He has to admit... waking up nestled in with the others like this, warm, was as nice as it was disorienting, and he's really rather unwilling to give it up so soon, even if the alarm shifts them from sleep to a lazy morning in bed.
So he can't be blamed for snaking an arm out of the pile to drape over McGillis'... anywhere, just to encourage him to stay put instead of using rolling over to get the alarm as an excuse to get up.]
[ Eli squints an eye to spy what Celeste is up to when he moves his arm and decides to join him in the scheme. He'll move a leg to drape it over one of McGillis'. There'll be no moving for any of them, please, and thank you. ]
Nahhh. Got enough of a workout last night. More than makes up for the run, you know?
[ Hey... hey now... The effortless dual gambit of tying him to the bed is impressive, but also... hey. He was going to slip out from under the covers in a few seconds and now he CAN'T.
It's strange to be so physically entangled with others - somehow stranger now that it's so casual than it was last night when it was decidedly sexual. With a huff, McGillis resigns to his fate and stays in bed. He'll turn back onto his back so he can turn his head to face them all, too.
They're all treated to the rare unstyled hair experience here, which means it's hanging all over his right eye. ]
[If you're warm, you can stick a leggy out from under the covers and/or convince Celeste to come over to your side of the bed, McGillis. Otherwise, there is no reason to be getting up so early after last night.
So as he shifts back onto his back, Celeste will move his arm just enough to do him the courtesy of fixing his hair just a bit, running his fingers through his bangs to at least shove it out of his face, affectionate impulses winning out over appreciating seeing him mussed and unstyled.
He kind of suspects it'll flop back sooner rather than later, anyway.]
Oh, we need excuses now? What is yours, then?
[Please, complain about being so cruelly restrained. He's daring you.]
[ Oh that's... that's strange. It's one thing to be touched this way by Izou, whom he's reluctantly allowed a top priority in his heart, and another to have it done so casually by somebody else. Even if that somebody is someone he had passionate sex with a night before.
McGillis finds himself suspended in a strange state where he is neither fully comfortable nor at all uncomfortable. ]
My excuse is that I can take the hints you're giving me.
[Izou is a surprisingly heavy sleeper, so it's only after continued conversation that he actually stirs at all, probably plastered to McGillis's side but splayed enough he's probably got an arm or leg on Eli and Celeste as well somehow, though no longer now that they've reconfigured.
As he lifts his head up, his already wild hair us even more of an untamed nest covering his face.]
Why're you guys awake it ain't even light outside yet.
[ Sorry, Izou. It's his fault. He rolls over onto his side towards the sleepy, wild-haired man as he says that. With one leg draped over McGillis', that means he's similarly draping a leg over Izou, too. Enjoy being double-trapped by a Celeste arm and an Eli leg, Izou. ]
Help us convince McGillis to stay in bed with us... I bet Celeste's hints weren't really enough.
[There's a long-suffering (affectionate) sigh as he takes Eli rolling to his side as an excuse to shift himself a little closer as well by way of turning somewhat from his side onto his stomach to fill the gap.]
Is hinting ever enough with you three? Stubborn.
[Okay, sometimes it's enough.
Sometimes they need an extra leg thrown over them, too, this one much more around waist height.]
[ Izou.... McGillis is going to kiss his hair. Fine, he's staying????? ]
... are you all people or are you vises?
[ TRAPPED, TRAPPED, TRAPPED.
But contrary to Eli's fears, McGillis was already resigned to his fate and not making any further move to escape being held by three people. For now. ]
And here you were worried the bed wouldn't fit us.
Edited (i am so sorry i am bad at formating today) 2024-10-26 01:42 (UTC)
[ There's a huff of laughter, and he moves his leg off of McGillis, drawing it back so he can shift it down and over to prod poor sleepy Izou with a knee instead. ]
Kill 'em with what? Your sword was pretty spent by the end of the night.
[ Weren't they trying to escape the sword euphemism? Too bad. Eli won't linger on it, at least. ]
And how was I supposed to know king beds were this big, huh?
[If the "teach me how to do things" continues to be a pretense for intimacy, he really can't help but wonder if Eli will like silks for the sole reason of being able to make a hammock for himself... Definitely something to discover in the future.]
You can pick up the dorm mattresses with one hand to change the sheets on the top bunk... they're barely a mattress.
[...Well, okay, probably two hands if you don't want to fight it, but look who is here.]
[ Well, this just makes McGillis feel kind of thoughtful. ]
It's interesting... I believe Celeste and I would have been equally incapable of imagining owning a nice bed for ourselves, once. But the existence thereof? Easily believable because others always have more.
[ A key part of their brand of poverty is watching other people not be poor. ]
But listening to you just makes me realize that my sense of scarcity was always defined by disparity rather than genuine absence of the needed goods.
[ ... someone please shut him up, they can't be having talks like this naked in bed. ]
Sure, I know that about you two. You're right that it's different, though. I grew up without a lot of what folks from my mom's generation had. They knew the time before the invasion, and I only know the time after.
[ It isn't something he sounds too broken up about. For him, it's like looking back at ancient history. It isn't so old that they can't scavenge and repair, of course, but many concepts are beyond his belief. ]
Industry is dead until we can revive it. Anything that someone couldn't make or repair themselves isn't going to be around for, well... I don't even know. Right now, the ADDF is focused on getting a supply chain for food first. They're also trying to get some old oil rigs up and running, but I know less about that than I do the farms.
[ >have a wild foursome and pass out in exhaustion after >wake up after less than 5 hours and immediately start having an in-depth conversation about experiences with destitution >profit??? ]
There are no old reactors you could repurpose for electricity?
[ 'McGillis, Ahab Reactors are a thing from your world' - he does not know this. ]
How much usable farmland is there? It's possible to grow corn for bio-fuel but only if that would not cause communities to grow hungry, of course.
[Despite his threat, Izou had nodded back off halfway to sleep almost immediately after saying it, but it's clear he's been half awake the whole time as he mutters;]
Talkin' like a dictionary this early in the morning.... vices and disparity and shit...
[Complaining, but also;]
Wish I had a better world ta offer you guys so ya never had ta have depressing conversations like this again.
Mm, guess so. Everyone's used to different stuff. Hey... Come here...
[ But what Eli will never be entirely used to is having someone so casually smooch him like this... or, at least, he hopes he's never used to it. It can be a surprise every time. Celeste ends up planting a kiss on a cheekbone, but that isn't precisely where Eli would have hoped for a kiss.
To remedy this, he turns more towards Celeste and reaches over to tug him closer, making it easier to pull him down for a kiss on the lips.
Sorry, Izou and McGillis. Making out next to you two is now fair game after last night. ]

I think... we all could, if we were willing to be as honest with ourselves as we are with one another.
